Abstract:Information security is an important area of information systems research, and protection motive theory (PMT) is its most influential theory. However, empirical findings based on PMT are often inconsistent and inconclusive. To reconcile these inconsistent findings, we conducted a meta-analysis and estimation of 92 published studies using structural equation modeling to investigate the relationships among PMT constructs. We found coping appraisal variables of response efficacy and self-efficacy o have the largest average effects on security behavior.
